Force vs. Mass: A Common Point of Confusion

Force and mass are not the same thing, even though units like kilogram-force make them look related. A kilogram is a unit of mass — how much matter an object contains — while a kilogram-force is a unit of force: specifically, the weight (gravitational pull) exerted on a 1 kg mass at Earth's surface. Mass stays the same anywhere in the universe; weight changes with gravity, so a 1 kg mass weighs 1 kgf on Earth but would weigh far less on the Moon. Newtons, pound-force, and the other units on this page all measure force (or weight), never mass.

SI vs. US Customary and Engineering Units

The newton is the SI standard and the default unit in physics, mechanical engineering, and international science everywhere. US structural and civil engineers instead work primarily in pound-force and, for large loads, kips (1,000 lbf) — the customary units baked into American building codes. Kilogram-force and metric ton-force persist informally in parts of Europe and Asia for everyday load ratings even though they were formally superseded by the newton decades ago, and the dyne survives mainly in older CGS-based physics literature and a handful of specialized surface-tension measurements.

What's the difference between kilogram and kilogram-force?

A kilogram measures mass, an intrinsic property of an object that never changes. A kilogram-force measures the weight (force) that Earth's gravity exerts on a 1 kg mass — 9.80665 newtons. The two are related by gravity, not interchangeable, which is why kilogram-force is considered a legacy "gravitational" unit rather than a proper SI unit.

Why do engineers use kips?

Structural loads on buildings and bridges routinely run into the hundreds of thousands of pounds-force. Expressing a beam's load capacity as "150,000 lbf" is unwieldy, so American structural engineers use the kip (1,000 lbf) to keep numbers compact and readable — "150 kip" instead — the same reasoning that leads metric engineers to prefer kilonewtons over newtons for large loads.
