How Data Transfer Conversion Works

The Formula

Every unit here is defined by a fixed multiplier relative to bit/s. To convert a value from one unit to another:

result = value × (factor of "From" unit ÷ factor of "To" unit)

For Megabit/Second → Megabyte/Second: multiply by 0.125. For example, 1 Mbit/s × 0.125 = 0.125 MB/s.

Bits vs. Bytes

Networking speeds are conventionally quoted in bits per second, while file sizes and download progress are conventionally shown in bytes per second — and since one byte is 8 bits, the two numbers for the same physical connection differ by a factor of 8.
