What is an Average Calculator?

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Explained

Each measure answers a slightly different question about your data:

Mean = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values
  • Mean — the sum of all values divided by how many there are. Sensitive to outliers: one very large or small value can pull the mean noticeably.
  • Median — the middle value when all numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values, for an even count). Resistant to outliers, which is why it's often used for things like household income.
  • Mode — the value(s) that appear most often. A data set can have no mode (all values unique), one mode, or several tied modes.
  • Range — the difference between the largest and smallest value, a simple measure of how spread out the data is.

Why Mean and Median Can Disagree

When data is symmetric, mean and median land close together. When data is skewed — a few very large or very small values pulling in one direction — the mean shifts toward the outliers while the median stays anchored near the middle of the data. For example, the numbers 10, 12, 14, 16, 100 have a mean of 30.4 but a median of only 14 — the single value 100 drags the mean far above where most of the data actually sits.

When to Use Each Measure

Use the mean when your data is roughly symmetric and you want a measure that accounts for every value (like average test scores). Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed (like home prices or income, where a few very high values would otherwise distort the picture). Use the mode when you care about the most common or popular value, such as the most frequently ordered size or most common survey response.

What does "average" mean by default?

In everyday usage, "average" almost always refers to the mean (sum divided by count). This calculator shows the mean prominently but also reports median and mode since they can tell a very different story about the same data.

Can a data set have more than one mode?

Yes — if two or more values are tied for the highest frequency, all of them are reported as modes (this is sometimes called a "multimodal" data set). If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode at all.

How is the median calculated for an even number of values?

Sort the values, then average the two values in the middle. For example, with 10, 20, 30, 40, the two middle values are 20 and 30, so the median is (20 + 30) ÷ 2 = 25.

What's the difference between range and standard deviation?
